What a new-build actually needs from a carpenter
A house on Chilmington Green or Finberry is structurally sound and thermally good, and its carpentry is specified to hit a build cost. Hollow-core internal doors, the thinnest architrave that passes, no storage beyond whatever the plot allowed, and a loft that was never designed to be entered.
None of that is a defect, but all of it is replaceable, and the difference is immediate. Solid doors close with weight behind them instead of rattling. A 95mm architrave gives a room a line. A wardrobe built to the actual ceiling height rather than a stock carcass gives back the foot of dead space above a flat-pack unit.
Why Ashford gets less period work than its neighbours
Compared with Canterbury or Faversham down the road, Ashford has relatively little protected or period stock, and that changes the shape of our year here. We do very little consent-governed repair and very little profile matching.
What we do instead is closer to fitting out: measuring rooms that are square and predictable, and building into them. It is faster and more repeatable work, which is why we can usually offer an Ashford start date sooner than in the older towns.
