The houses are well made and worth investing in, with one quirk that shapes a surprising amount of our work here: the ceilings are lower than people expect.
What the housing stock is like
The area where stock furniture sizes fail most often, because interwar ceiling heights do not match modern assumptions.

Why stock wardrobes do not work here
Flat-pack and modular wardrobe ranges are built to a standard carcass height designed around a modern ceiling. Interwar Bexley bedrooms are frequently lower than that, and the result is one of two things: the unit does not go in at all, or it goes in and leaves a gap above it that collects dust and does nothing.
Built to the actual height of the room, that gap becomes usable hanging or box storage. On a typical Sidcup bedroom that is a foot of full-width storage recovered, which is more than most people expect and the main reason made-to-measure pays here.
Undoing the 1980s
A large share of these houses had their original panelled doors taken out and replaced with flush hardboard ones during the 1970s and 80s, along with the thinnest architrave available at the time. Many still have them.
Putting solid doors and a deeper moulded architrave back is not a structural change and it is not expensive relative to what it does. It is consistently the job Bexley and Sidcup clients tell us made the biggest difference for the money, and it is usually a few days' work.
